Letter of March 18, 1935 to Mom

This letter was written to Mom by her father on the occasion of her 11th birthday. It was written aboard a ship called the Melchior. Following the letter is a full transcript in Dutch as well as a translation in English. Thanks to Karla Riach for her diligence in deciphering the old Dutch handwriting and doing the translation.

46, Melchior,18 maart 1935, maandagavond.

Mijn lieve jarige Letteke-pet,

English Translation:

46, Melchior, (name of a ship) March 18, 1935, Monday evening.

My darling birthday girl, Letteke-pet,

What a big celebration it will be on April 4th, by life and wellbeing, if all goes well our Letteke will be 11 years old already. Happy birthday my darling kitten. Our deepest wish and prayer is that God will keep you for many years to come, to the great joy of us all. Ask the Lord not only every time for good health and joy for work, but also that the Lord may live in your heart with his peace. Because then we will only truly be happy. On April 4th I hope to be on holiday in Soekaboerie (Indonesia) so we can celebrate your birthday together. On my birthday I will still be in Soerabaia, (Indonesia) which is a shame, but there is nothing much to do about it. The holiday will be good for mother and the children, and I also long for it. Probably I will go to Selaburak (Indonesia) on April 2nd or 3rd. We hope to write a longer letter later, the sea ship shakes so very much so that writing is very difficult. What did you think of the present that Hellinga bought you on our behalf? Now my darling kitten a leave you with a great big birthday kiss on my behalf.

Happy Birthday

Father.
